Glass splashbacks: getting the colour right

We measure and fit glass splashbacks for homes around Batemans Bay, and the colour can lift a whole kitchen. From Long Beach to Broulee and Moruya, the question that comes up first is nearly always the same: "how do I get the colour I want?" Here's how it works with us.

How a coloured glass splashback is made

A glass splashback gets its colour from the back. The colour is applied to the back face of the glass, so when it's on the wall you look through clear glass to the colour behind it. That's what gives it depth and a glossy finish that's easy to wipe clean.

Our glass supplier toughens the glass and colours the back for us. Toughened glass is far stronger than ordinary glass and stands up to the heat and knocks of a working kitchen. It also means everything has to be right before the glass is made: once glass is toughened it can't be cut or drilled, so every cut-out for a power point or switch is measured and made beforehand. That's one of the reasons I measure every splashback on site rather than working from plans.

Matching any colour

This is the part people enjoy. You can bring us almost anything as a colour sample: a paint chip, a tin of paint, a tile, a benchtop offcut, even a salt-and-pepper shaker. We pass it to our paint supplier, who reads it with a colour-matching machine (a spectro match) and mixes the colour to suit, so your splashback is matched to the actual thing you love rather than a guess from a screen.

If you're still choosing, we suggest starting with a Dulux or Taubmans colour. Their chips are easy to get, easy to compare in your own kitchen, and the colour can be matched precisely. It also makes life easier if you want the walls or cabinetry to tie in later.

Tips for choosing your colour

Look at your sample in your own kitchen, at different times of day. Morning sun on the coast and the warm light of evening can make the same colour look quite different, and kitchen lighting under the cabinets changes it again.

Think about the benchtop and the cabinets together. A splashback sits between the two, so hold your sample against both before you decide.

Remember that glass adds gloss and depth. A colour behind glass usually reads a little richer than the same colour flat on a wall.

If you'd rather not choose a colour at all, a mirrored splashback reflects the kitchen back at you and makes a small kitchen feel bigger. We make those too.

A lifetime warranty

Every glass splashback we make comes with a lifetime warranty. Like everything else we do, it's measured on site, made to order and fitted by our team.

What affects the cost?

We don't publish prices, because every splashback is made for one kitchen. The size of the area, the number of panels and joins, how many cut-outs for power points and switches, and whether you choose coloured glass or mirror all shape the quote. The measure and quote are free, and you'll have your quote before anything is ordered.

Quick questions

How much does a glass splashback cost?

It depends on the size, the number of panels, the cut-outs and the finish. Every one is made for one kitchen, so the measure and quote are free.

Can you match a colour I already have?

We can. Bring us a sample, from a paint chip to a benchtop offcut, and our paint supplier will match it for the back of your splashback.

Is a glass splashback strong enough for behind a cooktop?

Our splashbacks are made from toughened glass, which is far stronger than ordinary glass and suited to a working kitchen. I'll check the layout around your cooktop when I measure.
